A top official in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine safety division is at the center of a growing oversight controversy after the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) informed Congress that it cannot locate his official communications.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, revealed on April 9 that HHS notified him in March it was “having difficulty locating records” related to Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, who heads the CDC’s Immunization Safety Office. “More recently, HHS officials said that Dr. Tom Shimabukuro’s records ‘remain lost and, potentially, removed from HHS’s email system altogether,’” Johnson said.
Shimabukuro’s office, the CDC, and HHS have not commented publicly. According to the CDC’s website, Shimabukuro leads immunization safety efforts and has played a prominent role in monitoring COVID-19 vaccine safety. He has frequently spoken at vaccine advisory meetings and has been previously cited for allegedly providing false information, as reported by The Epoch Times.
He also co-authored peer-reviewed studies, including one published in the New England Journal of Medicine analyzing vaccine safety in pregnant women.
