Among them was Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the former Speaker of the House, who declared that “No one is above the law, and everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence” — this despite the fact that even someone with only a passing knowledge of how the legal system works knows that the onus is actually on the state to show guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, not the defense to “prove innocence.”
Another came from Sen. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), though his faux pas wasn’t as obvious at first blush. Here’s what Schumer posted to Twitter and elsewhere regarding Trump’s indictment:
“Mr. Trump is subject to the same laws as every American. He will be able to avail himself of the legal system and a jury, not politics, to determine his fate according to the facts and the law. There should be no outside political influence, intimidation or interference in the case. I encourage both Mr. Trump’s critics and supporters to let the process proceed peacefully and according to the law.”
