Over 50 bomb threats sent to Florida synagogues in one day

On Tuesday, over 50 synagogues in Florida were evacuated after receiving bomb threats via email. The threats targeted synagogues in Miami, Broward County, Palm Beach County, and elsewhere in the state. After a massive response from law enforcement, the threats were deemed harmless following police sweeps of the buildings.

This is the latest incident of antisemitic hate crimes in Florida since the Palestinian terrorist attacks of October 7, including a cyber attack on a synagogue in September and the vandalism of a kosher bagel shop in Miami. According to the Anti-Defamation League, there were over 463 antisemitic incidents in Florida in 2023. The FBI is currently investigating the bomb threats, as well as the other incidents.

On Tuesday, 26-year-old Paul Morris was arrested in Boca Raton for posting threats on social media. However, at this time it remains unclear if he is connected to the bomb threats or other hate crimes. Bomb threats are a federal crime and can carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
