Supreme Court Swears In Ketanji Brown Jackson

Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in Thursday as a Supreme Court justice, making her the first black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court.

Jackson is replacing Justice Stephen Breyer, whose retirement took effect Thursday at noon. Breyer administered the judicial oath, and Chief Justice John Roberts administered the constitutional oath.

Jackson’s husband Patrick Jackson and their two daughters were also present.

“With a full heart, I accept the solemn responsibility of supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States and administering justice without fear or favor, so help me God. I am truly grateful to be part of the promise of our great Nation. I extend my sincerest thanks to all of my new colleagues for their warm and gracious welcome,” Jackson said in a statement after her swearing-in ceremony.
